How to use this VO2 max calculator
- Use the distance from a past completed 12-minute assessment.
- Choose metres or imperial yards and enter the distance. Do not enter kilometres into the metres field.
- Select Calculate to see the converted estimate and the distance used in metres.
The formula and method
The conversion is estimated VO2 max (mL/kg/min) = (distance in metres − 504.9) ÷ 44.73. Imperial distance is entered in yards and converted using 1 yard = 0.9144 metres.
This tool accepts historical distances from 1,000 to 5,000 metres. That input range is a software guard, not a statement that the equation is accurate throughout the range or for every population.
Cooper field-test estimates infer oxygen uptake from performance. They do not measure breathing gases or directly assess cardiovascular health, and this tool assigns no age or sex fitness category.
Worked example
A past 12-minute distance of 2,400 metres gives (2,400 − 504.9) ÷ 44.73 = approximately 42.37 mL/kg/min. This is a field-test estimate; it is not assigned a universal good or bad category.
Understanding the estimate
- Running performance, measurement conditions and pacing affect the input independently of oxygen uptake.
- A field-test equation is not interchangeable with a laboratory measurement and has no universal individual error guarantee.
- This tool does not assess readiness for a maximal test or instruct a visitor to perform one.
Frequently asked questions
Can I enter a 12-minute walk or a cycling distance?
This tool uses the Cooper run-distance conversion. It does not implement a separate walking or cycling protocol.
Does this estimate tell me whether my fitness is good?
No universal category is assigned. Interpretation depends on the protocol, population and purpose; the number alone does not diagnose fitness or health.
Can two people with the same distance have different measured VO2 max?
Yes. The formula maps the same distance to the same estimate, while real physiology and running economy can differ.
